Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders

There are various conditions that have obsessive-compulsive qualities that are quite similar to OCD . These disorders are frequently described as Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders, and are treated primarily with Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. Likewise, certain anxiety disorders have features similar to OCD, and also respond well to Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. Below are some of the Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders and anxiety disorders that we treat at the OCD Center of Los Angeles:

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Intrusive, unwanted, anxiety provoking thoughts, and ritualized, repetitive behaviors done in an effort to reduce or eliminate the anxiety related to those thoughts. To learn more about OCD and its treatment, click here.

Pure Obsessional OCD (Pure O): A form of OCD in which clients report experiencing disturbing, unwanted obsessions without observable behavioral compulsions (though less obvious compulsions are almost always present). To learn more about Pure O and its treatment, click here.

Gay OCD / HOCD / Sexual Orientation OCD: A form of Pure O in which an individual obsesses about his or her sexual orientation.  To learn more about HOCD and its treatment, click here.

Harm OCD: A form of Pure O in which an individual obsesses about purposely or accidentally harming others (or themselves). To learn more about Harm OCD and its treatment, click here.

Scrupulosity OCD: A form of Pure O in which clients obsess about religious, moral, and/or ethical perfectionism.  To learn more about Scrupulosity OCD and its treatment, click here.

Relationship OCD (ROCD): A form of Pure O in which an individual obsesses about the nature and quality of their feelings for their romantic partner.  To learn more about ROCD and its treatment, click here.

Perinatal / Postpartum OCD: OCD in women which either starts or is exacerbated during the period of time from approximately 4-5 months prior to giving birth through the first 2-3 months after giving birth. To learn more about Perinatal / Postpartum OCD and its treatment, click here.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD): The obsessive, irrational preoccupation with a defect in one’s physical appearance. To learn more about BDD and its treatment, click here.

Hypochondria / Health Anxiety: The obsessive, irrational fear of having a serious disease or medical condition. To learn more about Health Anxiety and its treatment, click here.

Trichotillomania (Hair Pulling Disorder): The recurrent, compulsive pulling out of one’s own hair, resulting in observable hair loss. To learn more about Trichotillomania and its treatment, click here.

Panic Disorder: A history of panic attacks, followed by a persistent, intense fear of having additional panic attacks. To learn more about Panic Disorder and its treatment, click here.

Social Anxiety / Social Phobia: The excessive fear of negative evaluation, especially in social or performance situations. To learn more about Social Anxiety and its treatment, click here.

Olfactory Reference Syndrome (ORS): The obsessive, irrational fear that one’s body is emitting a foul and unpleasant odor. To learn more about ORS and its treatment, click here.

Research has found that the most effective treatments for OCD and these related conditions are specific types of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). The primary CBT techniques used OC Spectrum Disordersin treating these disorders are Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Interoceptive Exposure, Imaginal Exposure, Cognitive Restructuring, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Habit Reversal Training (HRT). All of our weekly therapy / support groups are led by our professional staff therapists, and use the same treatment protocol as our individual Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy program. We also offer webcam based online therapy and telephone therapy to clients around the world struggling with OCD and related OC Spectrum Disorders.  Telephone and online therapy are ideally suited for clients who have limitations that restrict their ability travel, and for individuals unable to find qualified treatment near to their home. The OCD Center of Los Angeles is a private outpatient treatment center specializing in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for the treatment of OCD and related conditions.
