OCD Therapy / Support Groups

In addition to individual therapy, we offer seven low-fee therapy / support groups for adults with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related anxiety-based conditions. These therapy/support groups are open to individuals with the following conditions:

Research has shown that structured, group Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can be extremely helpful in the treatment of these conditions. Quite often, people with these issues feel extremely isolated due to the secretive nature of their disorders, and have never met another person suffering with similar anxiety symptoms. Our groups provide a safe and supportive environment in which people can actively address their symptoms with others who are also working to overcome similar issues. Group sessions include individual members tackling specific symptoms that have been particularly problematic. Group members discover that trying new, more productive coping strategies is often easier with the support of other group members who know just how difficult it is to face one’s fears.

Group Therapy for OCD and AnxietyOf our weekly therapy / support groups for adults, three are for individuals with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and other related anxiety disorders, two are exclusively for adults with Dermatillomania (Skin Picking Disorder) and Trichotillomania (Hair Pulling Disorder), and one is specifically for adults with Social Anxiety / Social Phobia. Please note that all of our weekly groups are open only to adults over the age of 18, and participation requires assessment prior to admission. Below is information on each of these groups:

Tuesday Evening Online Therapy/Support Group For Adults with Dermatillomania and Trichotillomania

The OCD Center offers a weekly low-fee group specifically for adults with Dermatillomania, Trichotillomania, or other Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs). This group meets online via webcam and is open exclusively to adults over the age of 18 who reside in California

This group focuses on providing Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) combined with peer support, and meets each Tuesday evening from 7:15 pm until 8:45 pm. In order to facilitate open communication and group cohesion, the group is limited to a maximum of eight (8) members. You can click here to learn more about this group

Many individuals secretly suffer with Dermatillomania, Trichotillomania, and other BFRBs such as lip biting, cheek biting, and nail biting. These conditions are characterized by recurrent, compulsive self-damaging behaviors, and are usually resistant to improvement with traditional talk therapy. However, these conditions respond very well to a specific type of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy called “Habit Reversal Training” (HRT). This therapy has been found to be the most effective treatment for these conditions. Our weekly group focuses on HRT, Cognitive Restructuring, and Mindfulness-Based CBT, three treatment modalities that have been found to be particularly effective with these conditions.

This group is led by one of our professional staff therapists, Brandi Roberts, MS, AMFT. Meetings are open exclusively to adults over the age of 18 who reside in California, and participation will require an assessment prior to admission. For more information about participation in this group, please contact the OCD Center of Los Angeles at (310) 824-5200 (ext. 4), or or click here to email us. Assessment for Group Therapy Participation

All of our groups are exclusively for adults over the age of 18, and all groups require an assessment prior to admission and participation. The goals of our group therapy assessment are three-fold:

  • To make an accurate diagnosis.
  • To explain group processes and procedures.
  • To discern whether or not the individual being assessed is an appropriate candidate for participation in group therapy at OCDLA.

Please note that having an assessment does not guarantee admission to any group. A group assessment allows us to ascertain if there is any reason that we believe a prospective group member would not be a good fit for participation in one of our groups. We reserve the right to restrict and limit participation in all therapy groups that we offer.

Intensive Treatment Group Participation

The OCD Center of Los Angeles also offers intensive treatment for adults, adolescents, and children. This program is designed to meet the needs of those for whom standard outpatient treatment is either unavailable or insufficient. Our intensive outpatient program is ideal for clients from other states or countries who cannot find effective treatment near to their homes, and for those whose symptoms require a more rigorous treatment protocol. Adults in any of our intensive treatment programs for one month or more have the option of participating in one of our weekly therapy /support groups for OCD and related conditions
