Social Anxiety in Baseball

Anyone who reads the sports page of their local newspaper knows that there have recently been a number of professional baseball players who have been sidelined due to being diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder.  Just this past week, Khalil Greene of the St. Louis Cardinals was placed on the disabled list (DL) for the second time this season due to Social Anxiety.  He had previously been listed on the 15 day DL starting on May 29th of this year.  When he first came off the DL and returned to play in mid-June, he appeared to have responded well to the time off, as he hit home runs in his first three games.  Unfortunately, he soon started to experience batting problems, and was returned to the DL after going 1 for 17 in his next five games. Michael Jackson and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)

Michael Jackson has died.  And predictably, reports of his various mental health issues have rapidly come to the fore.

Of course, anyone who has been paying attention knew that Jackson was troubled.  Over the past twenty-five years, his physical appearance radically changed.  The glaringly obvious alterations of his nose, chin, facial structure, and skin tone indicate that he had multiple cosmetic procedures, and suggest  that he suffered from a significant case of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).  (more…)

OCD and the Swine Flu

The past few months have seen an avalanche of news stories on the swine flu.  And as usual, whenever the media focuses on a “new” disease, some of our OCD and Hypochondria clients find themselves obsessing about getting that disease.  This was true of Hantavirus in the mid-1990’s, Mad Cow disease in 2001, and SARS in 2003.  Do you remember the hundreds of news stories about these rare diseases?  One thing united most of these stories – irrational, exaggerated fear in response a relatively low-level threat.  That isn’t to say that nobody died from these diseases, but that the fear far exceeded the threat.
